BOBBY AND THE PLASTIC BEACH....

With a new album out soon, entitled Plastic Beach, the Gorillaz are the latest band to give fans a chance to listen to it before its release date. Instead of using out-dated website Myspace they have created their own widget to be hosted on the Guardian website to unleash their talents. (click here)

The hugely anticipated album features big names and unexpected collaborations including the likes of Lou Reed, Mark E Smith, De La Soul and Snoop Dogg. The first single off the album, Stylo, has already caused quite a stir and features R&B singer Bobby Womack and his trademark croon on the chorus. Usually seen collaborating with the like of the Happy Mondays this isn't a typical Gorillaz collaboration but with such an eclectic mix of people on the album, Bobby Womack doesn't seem out of place. Yet his story is one far removed from that of the Gorillaz.

Womack's is the story of R&B and soul itself, a crucial link between the gospel of the 1950s and the greatest soul and rock of the 1960s and 1970s. He worked with Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Rod Stewart and his own hits include 'What Is This' and 'Across 110th Street'. He turned to drink and drugs after the murder of his brother Harry and went on the rampage with the likes of Sly Stone for much of the 1970s. It was a wild time and he was lucky to survive.

He has returned from the brink and proved to be a key influenical figure to modern day musicians. Find out more about Womack's  colourful and turbulent life in his unique autobiography Midnight Mover
