Dear Tommy

Agnes Docherty was the original footballer's wife. She was married to Tommy Docherty, one of the most memorable managers in British footballing history, a frequently controversial figure in the sport. In 1977, Agnes' fairytale life came crashing down around her when it emerged that her husband was having an affair. Agnes had supported her husband loyally, brought up their four children and helped him to reach the pinnacle of his cut-throat career. Her story is told by their son Tom through the notes and diaries she left and they create a heart-warming tale of love and laughter and unflinchingly reveal the truth about the pressure and betrayal that broke the Docherty family apart.

Agnes Docherty was born in Girvan on the west coast of Scotland in February 1929. She married Tommy in 1949 and they split in 1977. Agnes died in September 2002. Tom Docherty was born in Preston in July 1956, the third of Agnes' four children. A freelance sports producer/director for the past 18 years, he has a daughter Amy, a stepdaughter Rebecca and lives with his wife Rachel and their two dogs in Essex.
