Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

By SARA - 20-08-2010 Rating:
On 5th August 1962, a 36-year-old women by the name of Norma Jeane Mortenson later baptized Norma Jeane Baker passed away in her sleep but to the world she was known as Marilyn Monroe. A global sensation in her lifetime, Marilyn's popularity has extended beyond star status to icon. Today her name is synonymous with beauty, glamour, sensuality and tragedy and it seems that any mention of her name still commands media and public attention.

The BBC reported recently that there is to be a touring exhibition of famous Marilyn Monroe prints taken by Magnum photographer, Eve Arnold. The collection is on show now at the Castle Galleries in the Grand Arcade. The photos are the result of a 10-year working relationship between the photo-journalist and Monroe. The giclee prints are of photos taken when Marilyn Monroe was at the peak of her fame in the 1950s and early 1960s.

If I could get to the exhibition, I would. Instead, the Castle Galleries website will have to suffice. The website offers a couple of sample photographs taken from the collection. In my view they are very impressive and capture Monroe in a new light. However, the pictures still come across as 'staged'. In my opinion, James Haspiel's book is still one of the most insightful. It was his photo that was found by her bed the day she died. His tale is haunting and evocative, and tells of her talent, fragility and her love and respect for life. Packed with photos, personal letters and documents, it is the ultimate tribute that will enthrall Marilyn and movie fans alike.
